You've probably heard of the GDPR (general data protection regulation).

The basic rules, which you can often find in the small print, are for example that they may not share your data with other parties and they must ask your explicit permission to use your data.

For example, would you think it was okay if...

... you, as a pizza lover, were shown adverts for gyms just a bit too often? Probably not. Unless you have given your explicit permission, it's not a responsible way of dealing with your personal data.

Not everything is covered by law.

There are also ethics to consider. Merel Noorman (Tilburg University / JADS) explains how that is particularly interesting when it comes to social media platforms.
